I came to Cuba with the help of percussionist and dancer Petra Morales, she lived in Paris at that time. She arranged to meet Luis Manresa, bass player of Afrocuba. Enrique Plá from Irakere was my drum-teacher in Havana. I like to remember the sessions in Emiliano Salvador's house and the kind meeting with Juan Carlos Abreu, the drummer and percussionist. Today he is playing in Tony Martinez' Salsa Group and he is living in Bern. Thus, Havana gave me the Clavé.
In the year 1986 my first journey led me to brazil. Marimba player and composer Ney Rosauro - I knew him from my student days at Würzburg - gave me the chance to study the "Brazil Style" at the "Escola de Musica" in Brasilia, where he was a teacher.
There Zequinha Galvao (Zequa) was my fantastic drum-teacher. He led me to the "Secrets of Brazilian Music". The singer and guitarist Philipp from Angola gave me the chance to play the drums in his afro- brazilian group. Together with Philipp we played concerts in Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia.
I went on my way from Salvador da Bahia to Rio de Janeiro. There I started to intensify my studies of Berimbau, Pandeiro, Surdo and small percussion.
Visiting different samba schools in Rio (Villa Isabelle, Beija Flor) being educated by Zequinha, my brazilian friends and musicians like Ney, Philipp, Nonato, Roberto, Tom, Leon and many others - all that made the "real kick" to found my first own Brazil-Band here in Germany.
cd - "Move o pé" Blumenküsser (Beija Flor)
From this time on brazilian music and yoga (yoga) got part of my life!
I came to Berlin through singer Lili Danin, the saxophonist Franz "Ufo" Albinger and the trumpet player Guglielmo Bucchino. All of them were playing in my latin-group at that time, here in Southern Germany.
My first Berlin-group I've played with was the World Jazz Band "Maguma". Members of that group were the guitar player Manfred Gruber, Guglielmo Bucchino, Ufo Albinger and the bass player Bernd Dieterich.
Together with Maguma I had an eventful time and I gave many concerts. In the Tempodrom, Jazzkeller Treptow, Flöz, Schlot, Junction Bar, Wasserturm, Martha-Kirche Kreuzberg and others.
1993 we were invited, together with "Embryo" to play at the afghan-persian New-Years-Festival Naurus at Jazzhaus Freiburg.
At the age of 12 it became obvious to me to follow the "path of the drum". At that time we established a group and we got going. We were teaching ourselves in playing our instruments.
On several suggestions of famous drummers like Jackie Liebezeit (Can),Dai Bowen,Charly Antolini and others I made up my mind to carry on playing the drums more like a professional. Günther Kamp (Music-School Ravensburg) managed to teach me the basics of drumming. Now I went out into the world of professional music.
